How many hours a day to you spend sitting at work? If you work at a desk job, this time sitting probably comes close to your entire workday. According to the New York Times, many Americans spend up to six or seven hours sitting at their desks each day. We are not doing ourselves any favors staying sedentary for long periods of time. In fact, the damage can be so long lasting that even daily trips to the gym will not be able to reverse the harm done. Sitting might as well be the new smoking.

The ill effects of chronic sitting have caused great alarm in the medical and scientific community. The numbers behind “sitting disease,” gathered by JustStand.org, cause you to leap out of your seat.

  • People who sit for more than 11 hours a day have a 40 percent increased risk of death in the next three years, compared with people who sit for four hours or less.
  • Workers who have held sedentary roles for more than 10 years have twice the risk of colon cancer.
  • Even when adults meet physical activity guidelines, sitting for prolonged periods can compromise metabolic health

The Solution

This best strategy to combat so-called “sitting disease” is to try to burn off some calories at work. You can do this right at your desk, by eliminating your chair altogether.

  • Standing Desks

Standing desks are arguably the most popular new age desks that employees and CEOs alike are embracing. These desks allow you to work while standing instead of sitting in a chair. The effort it takes to stand upright results in more calories burned. Harvard Health reported subjects burning around 88 calories per hour by simply standing during the work day.

  • Walking Desks

Give your fitness plan a boost and embrace a walking desk. These workspaces involve attaching a desk to a treadmill. With this method, you won’t only be burning calories at work, you may actually shed a few pounds.

  • Balance Ball Desk

The original alternative desk features a balance ball as a chair. From elementary schools to financial institutions, balance ball desks are common place across the United States. These balls have many positive results, such as an increase in balance and focus.
